Mt. Whitney Mountaineers Route
Mt. Whitney Mountaineers Route offers a magnificent uncrowded way to reach the highest point in the Lower 48 states!
Experience the summit of Mt. Whitney via the spectacular Mountaineers Route, a remote and uncrowded alternative to the popular Main Trail. While over 200 people hike the 11-mile Main Trail daily during the summer, the Mountaineers Route offers a serene escape with picturesque scenery and breathtaking vistas. First climbed by John Muir in October 1873, this historic line ascends a steep Northeast chute angled between 25 and 35 degrees up to a notch at 14,100 feet (4,298 meters). From there, the terrain steepens to 40+ degrees for the final 400 feet before opening up onto the summit plateau, just a five-minute walk from the highest point in the contiguous United States. We offer guided climbs year-round, featuring a classic rock and dirt scramble in summer and fall, and an outstanding, world-class snow climb during winter and spring.
Mt. Whitney Mountaineers Route Winter/Spring
Master the skills of high-altitude alpinism on our 4-day winter/spring Mt. Whitney Mountaineers Route expedition. Over four days, we will establish two expedition-style camps, with our highest camp positioned right at the base of Mt. Whitney’s spectacular East Face. This stunning alpine setting serves as our classroom, where our expert staff will train you in critical mountaineering techniques, including crampon methods, ice axe skills, fixed-line systems, and avalanche transceiver use. Because these are the exact skills required for major global ascents, this trip doubles as premier training for expeditions like Denali, Aconcagua, Mt. Elbrus, the Himalayas, and the Volcanoes of Mexico and Ecuador.

Mt. Whitney Mountaineers Route Summer/Fall
During the summer and fall, the Mountaineers Route on Mt. Whitney transforms into a spectacular, rugged alpine scramble over trail, rock, and dirt. Leaving the summer trailhead at Whitney Portal (8,350’ / 2,545m), you will journey through a stunning mountain landscape filled with towering pine trees, massive boulders, granite slabs, high meadows, and pristine alpine lakes. We establish our base camp at Upper Boy Scout Lake (11,300’ / 3,444m), tucked deep into the Sierra high country. From there, the route features exciting Class 3 scrambling, requiring the use of your hands and feet on high-quality, solid granite. You will ascend a steep, dramatic chute angled at 25–30 degrees before topping out at a high notch at 14,100 feet (4,298m). For the final 400 feet to the summit plateau, the angle steepens to over 40 degrees. While ropes are utilized for your safety, no prior rock climbing experience is necessary. This climb is both a world-class summit achievement and an exceptional training ground for major global mountaineering goals.
