Mt. Meru 14,980′ / 4,566m

On the front end of our visit to East Africa, we enjoy offering a visit to Mt. Meru

Overview

Mt Meru is Tanzania’s second highest peak standing at 4566m/14,980′. Mt. Meru is a beautiful, conically-shaped volcano, the photographic centerpiece of Arusha National Park. Its fertile slopes rise above the surrounding savannah and support a forest that hosts diverse wildlife, including many species of exotic birds, monkeys, leopards, cape buffalo, antelope, giraffe, and warthog. On a clear day you can see Kilimanjaro, less than 50 miles away.

Via the Momella Route, we leave the floor of the Arusha National Park, traveling up into the jungle to Miriakamba Hut at 2500m/8202′, where we will spend the first night. The next morning, we hike to Saddle Hut at 3500m/11,482′ where we will lunch and walk to Little Meru, a satellite peak near our camp. Day 3 is our summit day to Socialist Peak at 4566m/14,980′.

We return to Saddle Camp for lunch then pack up and descend to Miriakamba Camp for the night. Day 4 we exit the park gate. Our drive back to Moshi takes us through Arusha National Park where it is possible to see a wide variety of wildlife including giraffes, cape buffalos, zebras, baboons, and much more.
